In this blog, we’re sharing a guide to exploring South Africa under 2 weeks, covering some key highlights.

One of the most common requests we get is how to experience a Big 5 safari, spend time in Cape Town, and explore the Garden Route—all within a limited timeframe.

While Cape Town is stunning and a must-visit destination in Southern Africa, it’s not ideal for a proper safari. For the best Big 5 wildlife viewing, we recommend heading to one of the national parks, such as Kruger or Pilanesberg, which are both easily accessible from Johannesburg.

So, with the distance between Johannesburg and Cape Town in mind, here’s our guide to fitting in Kruger, Cape Town, and the Garden Route.

Step One: Fly Into Johannesburg

Start by looking for international flights into O.R Tambo – Johannesburg. It’s our busiest airport, and you’re likely to find better deals here compared to Cape Town.

Step Two: Go on a 3 or 4 Day Kruger Safari

Kick off your adventure with a Kruger safari that starts and ends in Johannesburg. These safaris run daily, so we can easily fit them into your schedule.

We offer both comfortable camping and lodge options, with the following being our most popular choices:

Step Three: Fly to Cape Town

After your Kruger safari, get a direct drop-off at Johannesburg O.R Tambo airport, where budget flights to Cape Town are frequent and affordable. With three budget airlines operating this route, flights are often cheaper than buses. Flying will save you time and allow for more activities in Cape Town. Our consultants can help you plan the flights and itinerary to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Step Four: Spend 2 to 3 Days in Cape Town

Plan to stay 2 to 3 days in Cape Town. It’s a fantastic city to explore independently, so we recommend booking a centrally located hotel, hostel, or AirBnB. From there, you’ll have easy access to must-see spots like Table Mountain, Robben Island, Lion’s Head, museums, and markets. If you’re interested in visiting Cape Point or the winelands, daily tours are available from most central hotels. We’re happy to suggest the best tours or guide you on how to explore on your own.

Step Five: Tour the Garden Route for 5 or 6 Days

After Cape Town, embark on a 5 or 6-day Garden Route tour. These tours cover all the highlights of the Garden Route, including a visit to Addo Elephant Park. The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most scenic regions—a perfect way to end your trip. You can finish your tour in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) or return to Cape Town. From there, you can catch a budget flight back to Johannesburg or head straight home.
